The two main types of diabetes were originally named for the treatment involved or the typical age when the disease began. Type 1 diabetes used to be known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Type 2 diabetes was once known as adult-onset diabetes or non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, although some people with type 2 diabetes do need insulin.
